Hip hop had me at "LMNO"'s track, Radiant, off World Famous Beat Junkies Vol. 2. I'd get excited when my brother would bring home new tapes and cds...Hiero's 3rd Eye Vision, Lootpack's Da Antidote, Arsonist's As The World Burns, DJ Honda's HII... and then buying MY OWN cd for the first time... Foreign Legion's Kidnapper Van. I loved how progressive it was, intellectual, soothing, political, and empowering. Then, some time after 2000, things just didn't feel the same. Maybe it was when Sway decided to join MTV or maybe if I had high speed internet and bittorents I would've been willing to keep up with "finding" music. With the growing popularity of the Ja-Rules and Nellys of the world, I was forced to find good music elsewhere.

And so I moved on to everything else from alternative rock, post-hardcore, indie rock, folk, indie pop, experimental, electronica. With electronica came trip hop and the rebuttal to the question, "Is hip hop dead?" Usually when I think trip hop I think Portishead...Thievery Corporation... But now, a lot of what is being called "real hip hop" is basically the whole electronica mash up with jazz, funk, hip hop... the trip hop/down tempo/acid jazz/etc etc. Whatever you want to call it, it's audible bliss. The way music can cross genres, adapt, and reinvent itself is really amazing. I think it also says something about the people who are a part of it... a community feel; harmony.

If you like Nujabes, then check these out (you can also find lots of videos on YouTube):

Also from Samurai Champloo:
Force of Nature / Fat Jon / Tsutchie

Shin-Ski: also hailing from Tokyo. beats are a bit more raw/hard. click through the myspace to check out the other groups he's affiliated with: martiangang & shinsight trio.
listen: til the day we die.

Nomak: also representing for Japan. if you want something more ethereal, check out the calm album. more ambient and jazz than hip hop.
listen: sanctuary

Empancipator: hailing from VA. what? sigur ros & mobb deep blended on one track? and it works? yup. he's also a part of hydeout productions w/ nujabes.
listen: with rainy eyes

Cyne: from Flo-Rida. they have some catchy tracks but it's nicely balanced with the more philosophical/deep tracks too. these MCs have also worked with Nujabes.
listen: maintain

Typical Cats: repping CHI/NY. denizen kane, qwel, qwazar, dj natural. still going strong with their progressive lyrics over chill beats. they don't really fall so much under the electronica/trip hop category but the jazz element is definitely present.
listen: snake oil

Although I'd pick Cursive over Living Legends any day, I still appreciate hip hop for what it was and what it's becoming. Hip hop definitely isn't dead. He goes through a series of, what would normally be, rather important/intense events, yet he's very indifferent towards each of them. This novel falls in line with absurdism, the philosophy that any efforts in finding meaning in existence and the universe is meaningless. [Not to be confused with the idea that life itself is meaningless] Throughout the book, Mersault displays these emotions, or lack thereof. Not grieving over the loss of his mother, willing to marry Marie just because it pleased her, having no regret in killing someone, all because it really made no difference in the end. However, he was happy with his life. There's a part where he talks about how it doesn't matter when you die because everyone dies at some point and there are those who live and the world carries on as it did before. Just because someone doesn't believe in an afterlife doesn't mean existence is meaningless for him/her. I think understanding there is a "benign indifference of the universe" makes you in tune with existence and humanity because you're seeing it for what it is.

I want to get my hands on Camus' essay detailing his absurdism philosophy: The Myth of Sisyphus.

Anyways, this book was a quick read. Too bad some things get lost in translation. Even the title being translated to The Stranger rather than The Outsider or The Foreigner gives off a different feel.

One thing I looooove about books is that they're so invasive and private at the same time. You're basically digging into the thoughts of the writer, her ideology, her core. And not to mention the smell of really old books, the sound of plastic covers on library books, or the feel of cracking a spine for the first time. Baaah I really want to join a book club. I don't think I'm getting as much out of a reading as I could... you know, like in English class when you spend weeks dissecting a book. In Mr. Souza's class we practically spent the entire period on just the first page of The Grapes of Wrath. I miss that.

The Big Bang Theory Fashion

I've always enjoyed the geek-wear on The Big Bang Theory. One day, Rikuo discovers his android, Sammy has taken a detour in her daily activities and decides to check the place out. It ends up being a cafe called, Time of Eve, where their only rule is to not discriminate between humans and droids. There are the themes of humanity vs. technology and the discrimination of droids. "Ignorant" youth who treat their androids like people are called "android-holics". But, the best part is the cafe. In the cafe, you really can't tell humans and androids apart. The androids turn off their halos and if someone leaves, you can't open the door for a few minutes so if an android does leave and their halo turns back on, there's no way of knowing. So far, only 2 episodes are being shown on Crunchyroll, but so far so good. Can't wait to see how everything unfolds between Rikuo and his droid and his droid-o-phobic friend.

Henry Fool & Fay Grim

8/10 for both. Too lazy to type out a review but amazing plot and acting. Good use of angles, especially in the sequel. They turned a story about a mysterious man and his influence on others, specifically on Simon, who he inspired to become a Nobel Prize winning poet, into a gripping tale of espionage in the sequel. Very interesting. Parker Posey is still cool. Oh and nice typography in the opening credits.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Loosely based on the novel, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is about a young girl named Konno Makoto who discovers the ability of time leaping. Rather than using it for anything significant or worldly she spends her time making her daily life what she wants it to be by going back in time to do such things like ace a quiz or eat the pudding her sister ate. Later she finds that her choices create a string of events and consequences. She receives advice from her aunt, Aunt Witch, that if she must be going back in time and is happy that there must be someone else that is suffering and this theme sort of plays throughout.

Like any other movie on time travel I was left with questions and analyzing what I thought were loopholes and inconsistencies. In the end, I just decided to let it be what it is, and that is a great movie. It intertwines excitement, comedy, romance, and most importantly, science. It's like the geeky love story of the 21st century. Fortunately, the love story was not sappy at all. It was very raw, delightful, and hopeful. One blatant message to take away from this movie is: Time waits for no one.

They are starting to show this movie in theaters in the US so I recommend catching it if it comes to your area. The animation is amazing. Simplistic people moving in detailed backgrounds.

Photo Project #1 - 10 words - SF

Objective: take a picture for every word in a list of 10 words. List provided by other person.

We pretty much walked around the park for two hours. I was sad because about 45 minutes in my card crashed or something and I lost some pictures... including one that I REALLY wanted to use for twenty-something. Oh well. I just shot with my 50mm on the d70. It was way too foggy to bring out our film cameras. We were originally planning on using some expired slide film but it was 100 speed. This was really good practice & tons o' fun. After I was done taking pix I said I didn't even really have anything for my words, but as I was uploading them I realized that I had stuff that worked. I still feel like I'm on the ship... I'm sitting in my computer chair but it's like I'm rocking back and forth. Too tired to blog in detail but here are a few pix I liked from the trip. More to come manana! Click on the panoramic to see a bigger one... it's composed of 6 pix.

Edit:

Mexico was a lot o' fun. Thanks again to the parentals for funding this vacay! <3

Day 1 & 2 - out at sea. had a few drinks. lost money in the casino.

Day 3 - Cabo San Lucas
Almost yacked while tendering to the pier. Those little boats are rocky & it does not help when you are a wee bit hungover. Walked around & checked out the shops & the mall. Ate at a restaurant which took the waiter over 30 minutes and reminding 3 times to bring me a Coke. He let me have it for free after that :] If I could do Day 3 over I'd definitely hit the beach and the beach only. Shopping was way too expensive.

Day 4 - Mazatlan
Took a Trolley Tour which brought us to the Historical Center where we got to check out the market & cathedral. Then, we caught the Cliff Divers. So crazy... they jump so many stories into what looked like shallow water filled with rocks but they do it 60 times a day so I guess it's not so scary to them. Then, last stop, the Golden Zone. More shops & we ate at The Shrimp Factory. Mazatlan is known for their shrimp catching. It's also the home to Pacifico & Tecate.

Day 5 - Puerto Vallarta
We did the Jungle Tour which is up a mountain outside of PV. It's also where they filmed Predator. It was about a 40 minute drive from the pier and a 40 minute hike to go from the restaurant, up the mountain, & back down to the restaurant. The restaurant is over a river which we were allowed to swim in. The water was SO cold but SO refreshing. We had a lot of extra time afterwards to check out the city/beach which we should've done but my stomach was feeling iffy & queezy from the bus ride & the quesadilla. Needless to say, when we got back to the ship, I was in bed all day & night.

Day 6 & 7 - Out at sea
More drinking, eating, & sleeping. Karaoke night was fun. There was this cute little Venezualan girl who dedicated "Sweet Carolina" to her husband. She could not sing for sh*t but she got the crowd going by dancing around the room and yelling to her hearts content. The comedy show was semi-funny. I believe the comedian's name is Darryl Jones. The jokes he had about the cruise ship and the tv channels was funny. But, the racial jokes were so played out. How many times do we have to hear about how white people talk to their kids like adults & how non-white parents spank their kids? So played out it's not even funny anymore.

My uncle and I sat with 6 other people for dinner time. They were all very nice and had kids all my age which was a bit awkward :D I'd say a majority of the cruise attendees were over 30 and those that were my age all had their significant other's along or were newlyweds. And EVERYONE assumed my uncle and I were married. Bleh! It got to the point where we'd introduce ourselves and straight up say, "She's my neice" or "He's my uncle". It was fun though. I am still feeling like I'm rocking away on that ship. I hope it goes away soon.

ALL pix are up!

Next stop: LAS VEGAS!

N2020 w/ 50mm lens

I just got the best early bday present... well, it's right up there with my parents deciding to pay for my Mexico cruise as my gift :D... I just got this amazing N2020 SLR with a 50mm lens AF. Best part is it attaches to my D70! And I've been wanting this lens for a while now so hurrah! The cool thing about the N2020 is that instead of doing the +/- feature for over/underexposure, it just tells you what shutter speed you should be on depending on what your aperture is. Also, for the focus, there are arrows and red lights and you just focus, focus, focus 'til you get the green light. Adrian gave me a quick tutorial on all the features and in that 10 minutes I feel like I learned more about cameras than I have in the so many years I've been trying to learn photography. hahaha.

Here are some quick shots:

Yesterday was a great day. Got this camera. Got a mustache. Went to Daiso for the first time! Had really good lechon kawali (kawawa!). Had amaaaaaazing, mouth-watering Fondant Au Chocolat from Beard Papa. Went on a long photo excursion in downtown (will post pix hopefully tonight). And managed a night of King's Cup without drinking a lick o' liquor. Mmmm... just thinking about that Fondant. Words cannot even describe how delicious it was.

Quick update on Xam'd. Finished watching all 9 episodes. It is getting very interesting. Can't wait to see how the story develops. I'm kind of seeing how this is going to be a theme of what does it mean to be human and who are we to judge who lives and doesn't.

Some of my fave pix from yesterday w/ the 50mm (rest can be found HERE):

Most of my pix from the actual photo excursion are on my Pentax & I haven't finished the roll yet. I'm going to make it a thing to go on photo excursions once a week. Hopefully it works out.

Time to pack for the cruise!

New Anime! Xam'd: Lost Memories

Don't be fooled by the ecchi poster, this anime is nothing like that (aside from the Captain's scantily clad outfit & her dirty remarks). This was debuted this year by PlayStation at the E3 con and is produced by BONES (Darker Than Black, Eureka7, Fullmetal Alchemist). So far there are 9 episodes of a 26 episode series. I've only watched 3 and I'm already reeled in. This anime has a very intense storyline and is still very mysterious. It has a steampunk feel mixed with elements of Evangelion meets Nausicaa.

So far, from what I understand, a school boy from Sentan Island (neutral territory) becomes a Xam'd, a humanform weapon, after meeting a girl with white hair. Now he is on board a postal airship trying to tame this "thing" with the help of Nakiami.

After seeing Darker Than Black, I was a little skeptical about starting this one. But, once I saw photos of the animation, I couldn't help myself. The art is very simplistic and the colors are lively and bright, not so much vibrant. Although, I'm not sure if it was just the streaming vid I saw, the quick fighting scenes seemed to be poorly drawn. Maybe we're meant to only watch this on blu-ray? If you're looking for an anime that has adventure, action, and is somewhat a thriller in that you don't know what the hell is going on yet, watch this.

Oh and the opening and ending themes are freaking awesome. The nice part, though, is lying in bed all day catching up on anime. I have also limited my internet usage by cutting off aim, twitter, & facebook, and checking email once a day. More like internet communication usage because I still go on to check my reader & imagechan. And 3 more days until I leave for Mexico! It'll be nice to be cut off from the world for a bit. Anyways, here are some reviews on what I watched... I know, they're old, but had to watch them at some point.

1. Full Metal Panic?
Sagara works for a secret mercenary unit, Mithril, and is sent on a mission to act as a high school student in order to protect Chidori. Chidori is a 16-yr-old girl who is a "Whispered," someone that possesses knowledge of black technology useful for the military.

Funny at times and a tad bit ecchi (perverted) with the pantie shots. FMP is nothing special. Everything seemed generic. Not much character depth or growth. Well, maybe a little in Sagara. It was entertaining to say the least.

2. Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
The second series of FMP focusing mainly on the high school life of Sagara and Chidori. This series is less serious and funnier than the first. This had a feel of just silly OVAs. If you're looking for something fun to watch, you should watch this. I definitely thought this was better than the first series since the military aspect of the first one often left things a bit dry.

There is no continuous plot in this series. Just a bunch of random stories that happen to Chidori and Sagara and their classmates.

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Shinji, a 14-yr-old boy, is chosen to be a pilot of Unit 01, an Eva created by the company NERV. NERV's main purpose is to destroy Angels, unknown beings that are destroying the Earth.

I was never really into mecha type anime, but this one, I don't even know if it's considered mecha, is amazing. The intensity, drama, and action is great. There is a lot of character development and growth throughout the series. You see the characters at their weakest. Why do we do the things we do? Is it for ourselves or for others? These types of questions get asked a lot throughout the series. The last two episodes were highly criticized but I think it was a nice end although very confusing. What lies after the storm has passed and how have our decisions affected our reality?

4. The End of Evangelion

Episodes 25-26 and the 2nd Evangelion movie. It continues the story of the anime series. Another amazing continuation. This time dealing with more questions about humanity and reality. I don't want to say too much on what the plot is about because that'd be a spoiler for the series. All I can say is these two episodes were a lot gorier and very graphic. I loved the animation of the Evas and Angels. It had a more artistic feel than the series. But another great ending. Sigh.

Last year they released Rebuild of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. This is the first of four movies to be released in the coming years with new scenes and alternate endings to the original series. I started watching it and so far it looks exactly like the first episode, but we'll see how different it is when I finish it. The 2nd one will be released next year. Can't wait!

sac anime!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Cosplaying was a success. As Pikachu & Ash, we got attacked...well, mainly Ash. She was asked to be humped and told "I love you" several times. I just got a hug. As Mario & Luigi, we got a lot of smirks and weird looks. Overall, a very good weekend :]

Now I have to study. Finals are on Thursday! I know I have been lagging with updating my site with the goodz but I've been busy with school. Once school is out I will be adding more items to the site...and hopefully making new ones as well. Then, I'll be off to Mexico!

If you got a coupon from Sac Anime, please use it :D
Also, the rest of the pix are up on my flickr.

another taste...

of what is coming your way at sac-anime :D

PWAHAHAHA!!!

japantown!

Picked up some books when I went to J-town on Saturday. These three aren't new but I think they definitely take anime to a new level. When everyone thinks anime, they assume kawaii big-eyed schoolgirls and something that involves 1) swords 2) guns 3) ninjitsu of some sort. Just like any medium, especially in animation, there are the little treasures you find that are visually orgasmic and breathtaking.

MIND GAME - written by Robin Nishi; screenplay/directed by Masaaki Yuasa (Samurai Champloo, Cat Soup, Genius Party)

The gist - Nishi, this guy who is completely in love with a childhood friend, Myon, meets up with her. They get into a mishap with the Yakuza and everything just starts snowballing.

The point - In the beginning, there's like 3 min. of fast clips, basically taking you through the lives of the characters and through the story. The events the characters went through were based on the decisions they made. Any story/event can be reinvented just by altering one choice...and that will snowball into new events, new decisions. There are so many options our lives can go. It really is a mind game trying to see all the different possibilities.

The animation is so insane. My imagination can't even work that well. They mix different styles and also use some real-life pictures. Some mindblowing scenes: the "love making" and the dancing scene. Another reason why animation is freaking amazing because there really are no limits.

TEKKON KINKREET - based on Taiyo Matsumoto's Black and White

The gist - Two brothers, Kuro & Shiro, trying to survive in a messed up town. Kuro, the older brother, tries to protect his brother and the town from Yakuza. Things start taking a turn for the worse when Kuro and Shiro get split up.

The point - There's a scene where Shiro talks about how he has all the screws that Kuro is missing. Throughout the entire movie, you can just feel how strong their bond is.

Wobbly-lined anime. Great colors. Music amazing, which was done by Plaid. This movie was intense, sweet, and kind of heartwrenching.

FLCL "Furi Kuri" - created & directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (Evangelion)

The gist - a 6 ep OVA about an alien, Haruko, and her run-in with Naota. She attempts to use Naota in order to search for Atomsk and go against Medical Mechanica.

The point - Was there a point? HAHA. This anime was absolutely ridiculous. Amazing animation. Although the basic drawings are pretty traditional, they use some nontraditional formats with the timing and particular scenes are pretty random... like the South Park one. They even did some manga scenes and had some chibi moments. I think every anime needs a chibi scene!

All three are pretty crazy and worth watching more than once.

santa cruz

the beach

the governator

the pirate ship

tracy w/ giant donut

donut w/ giant donut

adrian w/ giant donut

partners in crime since 1997

pictures by adrian. shot, processed, developed.

Double Shot - best view of the ocean
Pirate Ship - gigglies in the stomach
"Rape It" - leaaaaaaaaaan
Hurricane - but you could call me slurricane

Corn dogs tasted like crap on a stick. After some time and calculation, we figured out you need to ride 8-10 rides in order to get your $30 worth of the unlimited bracelet. Unfortunately, we were only able to accomplish 4. The clouds rolled in around 6 :\ I think that's what my dream was trying to tell me... the dream of the lava ball crashing into the ocean creating a tidal wave onto the boardwalk and causing a massive fire. Yup... that all meant there was going to be rain. haha.

drawing mood

Kin-Yoobi Con + Updates

Kin-Yoobi Con in Hayward was fun! Sales were good. Too bad I didn't have more onigiri plushies... I will definitely make sure I bring an overload next time.

Adrian made us really kawaii bear hats based off Shiro's hat from Tekkon Kinkreet. Isn't it cute??

Also, The Donut Lounge will be at You Bazaar! in SF on Nov. 2. Will give more details closer to the event.

I will DEFINITELY be working on new products for You Bazaar. More plushies and bags and hopefully, t-shirts. Excited!

Debating on whether I should vendor at con-X-treme. I spoke to the founder yesterday at Kin-Yoobi and the con sounds fun. BUT it's the same weekend as Sac Anime. AND it's 4 days in San Mateo. Quite a commute... but for $100 for all four days... that sounds worth it to me. I'll update later on my final decision. The cool thing about this con is that it's about EVERYTHING animation. They're going to have Adobe CS3 workshops! Hmm... I think I convinced myself while typing this out.

Alright, well, the weekend was damn exhausting. I was up for 24 hours and have pretty much been passed out all day today but it was well worth it.

Special thanks to my helper. Prepare yourself for the Ultimate Speed challenge the next time we table.

PLUSH!

some rafting tips

1.
